Photo courtesy of Gum-Dip Theatre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">O<strong>nce a week, girls from the Jennings Community Learning Center school in Akron race to Gum Dip Theatre in North Hill to participate in Girls\u2019 Studio, an after-school theater program.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Girls\u2019 Studio, for ages 11-14, originally began in 2017 when Katie Beck worked with South Street Ministries, who had their own women empowerment group. She took her experience using Theatre of the Oppressed and has since been given a grant to do the work with the Jenning CLC school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program, focusing on the girls&#8217; mental and emotional well-being, has a set structure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can&#8217;t just be blind about people&#8217;s feelings. Be blunt about people&#8217;s day, and how it&#8217;s going,\u201d  Samantha Byake said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, the day begins with a check-in and is then followed by a \u201cwarm up\u201d and some basic theater training involving movement, voice or imagination \u2014 allowing them to build their skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>A part of theater is all about using your mind, body and soul, so you can\u2019t use all those things if mentally you\u2019re not okay.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><cite>Samantha Byake<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe girls are adjusting, and they\u2019re responsive,\u201d Byake said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a methodology called \u201cTheatre of the Oppressed,\u201d girls are taught how to express their emotions through their performances and become \u201cco-creators of their world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was a good alignment because Theatre of the Oppressed is generally better for communities who don&#8217;t do theater regularly or don&#8217;t have any exposure,\u201d she said.&nbsp;\u201cSo I thought it would work really well because it&#8217;s so accessible that in that study, it just seemed like it would align well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samantha Byake, co-facilitator of Girls\u2019 Studio, is a psychologist and helps guide the girls in conversations regarding mental health and career guidance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA part of theater is all about using your mind, body and soul,\u201d Byake said. \u201cSo you can\u2019t use all those things if mentally you\u2019re not okay.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building off that mindset, in order to navigate personal mental wellness, Beck says the goal is to \u201cexplore your personal experience and build strong relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few setbacks while getting approval from the Board of Education, the Girls\u2019 Studio was able to begin this April, currently has seven students and is continuing to grow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beck explained that each session will have Theater of the Oppressed activities, which will eventually build into a performance that culminates all of the sessions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/theresettlementproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gumdip_logo_500x500_noBG.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theresettlementproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gumdip_logo_500x500_noBG.png 500w, https:\/\/theresettlementproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gumdip_logo_500x500_noBG-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/theresettlementproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gumdip_logo_500x500_noBG-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gum Dip Theater logo courtesy of website. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as Forum Theatre, the girls will perform the scene twice, and the second time, the audience is welcome to stop and interject their own ideas and opinions about the situation happening in the scene.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of our stories center and uplift communities,\u201d Beck said. \u201cSo we create original plays and we usually devise an ensemble. Usually our productions include stories from different communities and in a way, that is a little bit more unique than the traditional Little Mermaid or examples like that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gum Dip Theater recently performed \u201cThree Countries, One Mother\u201d on April 27 at the North Hill library.
